German is a civilized language spoken by (once) civilized people. Japanese is hideous. It sounds like you choked on something pointy. English is a bad language too because it is too complex and it is not designed to work well for poetry or song, and even though I speak English, I know I speak a terrible language. Ukrainian, French, Dutch, Xosa, and Serbian all sound
Well, I'm 16 and I was born in Germany and I think you can't say whether German is beautiful or not because there are so many dialects. You cannot compare high German to Saxon or to Bavarian or to Austrian German,... There are also many different dialects in Bavaria (swabian, Franconian, Palatine,..) Even the city I live in, with less than 15.000 inhabitants has its own idiom. I personally struggle with understanding Saxon and many other dialects; when you don't speak German you would think these are different languages!Besides, German is pretty similar to Dutch, but sounds way harsher.(sorry for my English)
If you listen to German being sung, it sounds so beautiful and not harsh at all. Remember that a vast majority of baroque, classic, and romantic composers and poets spoke German. It is the very language God has created for music because it goes smoothly with the soft tunes of all these classical musical pieces. Also, it goes smoothly and harmoniously with worship hymns. Remember Martin Luther was also a composer on top of being a religious advocate.
German beautiful? I guess each Person has his own point view or preferences. My German is quite good and I assume I'm staying objective by claiming that German can sound scary. Don't judge how beautiful a language is just by listening music or I don't know what. Get real conversations as well. I find German some times aggressive and when I listen German girls speaking with each other I ask my self why the language make girl appear so aggressive and reserved. Anyway I admit I some like to when someone say "oooh wie s眉! "
I have loved this language since I started listening to German music when was about 14. To the United States at very least, it carries a stigma of sounding rough, rugged, and angry. That's not true: listen to 眉bers jahr by Wolfsheim, it can sound graceful and beautiful. Aside from the aesthetics, I love how direct it is, and the way the words really illustrate things...for example, "Hertzblut" delivers so much more impact and clarity than "heart and soul." Heart and soul would have to be explained, but Hertzblut is self-explanatory. I would love to marry a native German, but I'd settle for a German speaking man.
